Description

Daum is the highest quality craftsmanship combined with a passion for creating exclusive objects.

Discover the history

Daum, the legendary master glassmaker who for over a century has maintained close relationships with the greatest artists of his time, giving their works a second life in crystal and color. From École de Nancy, Art Nouveau, to decorative arts, from Majorelle to Dalí, Arman, and Hilton McConnico, Daum has not missed any of the magical encounters between artistic creativity and modern knowledge, continuously renewing the union of art and exceptional craftsmanship.

Few brands have collaborated with so many artists: over nearly 140 years, more than 350 exceptional autographs have created an unparalleled legacy, a unique collection of this kind.

How can we translate these works into crystal sculptures? Here is Daum's secret: a producer of extraordinary objects, with a highly educated workshop, a laboratory of wonders, a designer of incomparable items.

Creation methods

The pâte de cristal technique is rare and very ancient. This technique appeared as early as 5000 BC (found in the tombs of pharaohs). Long forgotten, it was rediscovered by Daum in 1900 and further developed in 1968. The process is extremely delicate. Items created by combining pieces of crystal mixed in molds are characterized by graininess, materiality, and soft contours, which cannot be achieved with blown glass.

Daum’s specialty, copied but never matched—the pâte de cristal—is a precious material that gives the object a sculptural dimension and continues to evolve. This crystal paste has the unique property of imparting transparency to the shapes it reproduces. The brilliance of this material, the intensity of colors, and subdued shades give it a distinctive character.

The crystal paste contains nearly 30% lead. The material is produced from specially prepared crystal in kilns. Several factors influence the final color effect: weighing of materials, mixture proportions, chemical reactions of certain minerals and metals, temperature increase, and cooling in furnaces.

Thanks to the Daum-developed lost-wax casting method and crystal casting technique, reproducing the original is perfect and aligns with the artist’s wishes. Currently, Daum is the only crystal manufacturer in the world capable of creating this exceptional material with such precision. Crystal paste is a substance that has been evolving for over a century, adapting to the whims of glassmaking masters’ imagination. It is through mastery and continuous research that world-renowned masterpieces are born.

Additional information Limited edition of 125 pieces "Water lilies, I am just a diagonal cut by emotions, memories, tastes and old loves transformed in the solitude of the studio. Before they became a sculpture, "Water lilies" were first perfume, a warm and sweet summer afternoon, a river of shade under the trees, a man who goes to collect water lilies in the stream to transplant them to the fountain at home... Perfume again... mixed with the scent of whites lilies in the garden. What do we know about what our hearts and hands mix with the earth when a sculpture is created under our fingers? We know everything we have gathered from emotion, from the moment... and then we forget to see it emerge in the most secret part of the earth. But what artist can say they are never satisfied? That he wouldn't want to carve the sky or the clouds on the ground... time, why not... if he could find a way to do it. When Daum entered my life, I realized that it was the light and the elusive colors of the sky that could be sculpted, how could I resist... I entrusted my first sculptures, impatient to see how my clay, so heavy and full, could become color, transparency and light... It was so beautiful and so different... that's how our collaboration began. I entrusted them with my clay, so that, like alchemists, they could give it back to me, like a part of the sky cut by light and a flash of color. My admiration continues with each new sculpture.
