Description
Satyric bronze sculptures by Giovanni Fabbrini, early 20th century, resting on two turned black marble bases. Here is a pair of young boys engaged in blacksmithing, probably as apprentices; one stands at the anvil, feeling pain after crushing his finger during forging, while the other loudly laughs at his friend's misfortune. Both figural sculptures originate from the socialist realism movement, which from the second half of the 19th century addressed the issue of poor working conditions; however, in this case, they are interpreted satirically, capturing a humorous moment in a sad chapter concerning child exploitation.
They are crafted with the utmost care, without signatures or inscriptions, and date from the early 20th century.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its characteristic features.
Many styles distinguish antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century, during the reign of the Biedermeier style, is one example. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was influenced by Napoleon's reign, which imposed a significant resemblance to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate, prestigious pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These were quite distinctive products but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. During this period, there was also an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique suitable for your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as many fakes circulate on the market.
