Exquisite antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent choice for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing community of enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality vintage items with character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
While numerous styles characterize antique furniture, a few stand out as the most significant. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Early in this century, antique furniture also included Neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and Victorian styles. Toward the end of the century, these transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, inspired by Napoleon’s reign, with strong references to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco' meaning irregularly developed pearl, was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture meant to impress with splendor. Selective use of materials emphasized the opulence of these pieces.
Today, we see how much the Baroque style has influenced modern classical furniture, which often echoes the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was typically heavy and robust, using dark stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These pieces often featured mythological and classical motifs, with supports and legs shaped like animals.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common in Renaissance-style furniture. Many leading global companies reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that each country had its own approach to furniture-making, giving each style a unique character. This is especially relevant when seeking exclusive antique pieces for your interior.
The key aspect of authentic antique furniture is originality. This is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photographs. We also offer access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
