Exquisite antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent choice for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality vintage items with character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with distinctive features.
While numerous styles characterize antique furniture, a few stand out as the most significant. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and Victorian English styles. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon’s reign, with strong references to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, deriving from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was highly ornate, designed to impress with splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how the Baroque style has significantly influenced modern classical furniture, which often resembles the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a strong mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often finished with brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These pieces were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Many leading global companies now reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty and history of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially relevant when seeking exclusive antique pieces suited to your interior.
The key aspect of original antique furniture is authenticity. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with fakes. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts worldwide.
