Description
A large empire-style chandelier made of gilded iron and crystal, sixteen lights, circa 1780. A monumental, antique chandelier for a salon from the late 18th century. It originates from Piedmont, a region in northern Italy bordering France, from the Imperial period, handcrafted from iron and crystal in excellent condition. This 18th-century chandelier, characterized by a classic hot-air balloon structure and the elegance of the imperial era, is an accessory that perfectly fits modern interior styles. This chandelier with shimmering crystals and classic design is an Italian masterpiece of art and light, an exquisite element of luxurious lighting.
The round construction is made of wrought iron and decorated with motifs inspired by plants, palmettes, and floral ornaments. The gold finish is the essence, with lights arranged on two levels of height. The central crown features eight curved iron arms with double volutes, decorated with leaf and zoomorphic motifs, and an eagle. Eight additional lights are placed on decorative candelabra with volutes, pyramidal castings attached with a bayonet, crowning the larger crown.
The upper crown is adorned with curved castings in the shape of palmettes, a cascade of chains, and garlands of crystal ovals complete this elegant chandelier, which was created at the end of the 18th century for lighting with candles in large halls.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was highly decorative furniture designed to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its own character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique piece that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the customer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
