About the Artists: J.H. Dearle (1859-1932) began his long career at William Morris's interior design firm in 1878. His talent for drawing was soon recognized, and he became a tapestry apprentice under Morris himself. In 1890, he became the chief textile designer, and in 1896, after Morris's death, he was appointed artistic director of the entire company. With highly decorative yet naturalistic designs, Dearle’s wallpaper and textile patterns elevate nature into the realm of fine arts and embody the Arts and Crafts movement’s passion for beautiful, handcrafted everyday objects.
