The theme of this print features children's books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries from the Bodleian Library. Richly illustrated covers in bright reds, blues, and greens adorn rows of shelves with titles such as Little Miss Sunshine, No Ordinary Girl, and A Girl of High Adventure. These are carefree stories with brave female characters, which can be found in the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest libraries in Europe. After retiring, Sir Thomas Bodley decided to reopen the library to the public and in 1598 renovated it to hold around 2,500 books. The doors first opened to scholars in 1602, and in 1610 Bodley agreed with the London-based Stationers’ Company that a copy of every book published in England would be kept in the library. Since then, many extensions and buildings have been added, and today the Bodleian Libraries house over 12 million printed items.
