This is an important work from a key period in Monet's career. In the early 1870s, Monet mainly lived in Argenteuil but often traveled to his hometown, Le Havre, on the Normandy coast. In 1872 and 1873, he painted several views of the port in Le Havre, including the famous Impression: Sunrise (Paris, Musée Marmottan), the painting that gave the Impressionist movement its name. The view here is from one of the walls of the inner port, looking towards the Musée des Beaux-Arts. The museum was destroyed during World War II and has since been replaced by a modern building.
