Grant Wood's image depicting two stoic Iowa citizens standing in front of a Gothic-style house has become a classic of contemporary American art. Based on a painting by Wood's daughter and a local dentist, it serves as a provocative declaration of mundane regionalism in a cultural world then dominated by European and Russian modernist trends, perhaps a respite for the expressive works of Picasso, Kandinsky, and their colleagues. American Gothic folk art presents a familiar world of local history, saturated with echoes of Old West photography, featuring proud homeowners awkwardly standing in front of their pioneer homes. However, wood subtly questions the simplicity of the image, with darker implications of the Gothic window, tricorn hat, and the raw expression of the characters, drawing viewers into a more mysterious world of long, dark nights in the American Gothic village.
