Claude Monet was a leading figure of the 19th-century Impressionist movement, which takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise (1872). Monet was known, among other things, for his landscapes of Paris and Normandy, as well as beautiful studies of flowers, and approximately 250 stunning oil paintings of water lilies. Water-Lily Pond depicts Monet’s own water garden near his estate in Giverny. In 1899, captivated by the scenery and passionate about preserving its beauty, Monet began a series of 17 paintings, each featuring a Japanese-style wooden bridge over a pond. He meticulously recorded how the scene changed with the shifting light throughout the day, calmly capturing this charming spot in his garden with short brushstrokes, as he often did in his later years.
