Claude Monet was a leading figure of the 19th-century Impressionist movement, named after his painting Impression, Sunrise (1872). Monet was known for his Paris and Normandy landscapes, beautiful studies of flowers, and approximately 250 stunning oil paintings of water lilies. Water-Lily Pond depicts Monet’s own water garden near his estate in Giverny. In 1899, captivated by the scenery and passionate about preserving its beauty, Monet began a series of 17 paintings, each featuring a Japanese-style wooden bridge over a pond. He meticulously recorded how the scene changed with the light throughout the day, calmly creating this charming garden spot with short brushstrokes, as he often did in later years.
