Description
Pipe for men. Portrait of Hans Müller in bronze from the early 20th century, charming figural sculpture with dark patina on a marble base, signed on the left arm H. Müller. At the lower part of the bronze figure, there are corner marks with the letters BM and AEG, probably from the foundry.
Austrian sculptor Hans Müller was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1873. He was a student of Edmund von Hellmer at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and is best known for his busts of the famous Vienna Society, modeling several animal sculptures, mainly hunting dogs.
This bust was probably cast around 1910, during the peak of Art Nouveau. Condition is good, with a superb dark patina, minor chips on the marble profiles of the base.
Exclusive antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture originates from the 19th century, during the reign of the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was inspired by Napoleon’s reign, featuring significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Classical-style furniture corresponds to Louis XVI, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word barocco—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and solid, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These were quite distinctive products, but they also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. During this period, mythology and antiquity were also of interest, so supports and legs often took animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for exclusive antiques suitable for your interior.
The most important aspect of original antique furniture is authenticity. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many counterfeits circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos. We also have appraisers, art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world at your disposal.
