Description
Pipe for men. Bust of Hans Müller in bronze from the early 20th century, charming figural sculpture with dark patina on a marble base, signed on the left arm H. Müller. At the lower part of the bronze figure, there are marks with the letters BM and AEG in the corners, probably from the foundry.
Austrian sculptor Hans Müller was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1873. He was a student of Edmund von Hellmer at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and is best known for his busts of the famous Vienna Society. He modeled several animal sculptures, mainly hunting dogs.
This bust was probably cast around 1910, during the peak of Art Nouveau. Condition is good, with excellent dark patina, minor chips on the marble profiles of the base.
Exquisite antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevalent Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles blend into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Classical furniture corresponds to the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were chosen selectively to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can see how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style also had a significant impact, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a lasting mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of sideboards and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently across countries, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for exclusive antiques suitable for your interior.
The most important aspect of original antique furniture is authenticity. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s compliance with its description and photographs. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
