Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was one of the most influential artists of the Golden Age of Illustration. He worked on timeless classics such as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906) and illustrated editions of William Shakespeare's plays, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1908), which featured his first fairy-tale illustration that made him famous. He also illustrated the 1907 edition of Alice in Wonderland, from which this Alice at the Tea Party illustration originates. Alice is at a tea party with the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, and a tired Dormouse. The Hatter explains that they must drink tea all day because Time punishes him by stopping at 6:00 pm, which is, of course, tea time.
