Austrian painter Wilhelm List was born in Vienna in 1864. He studied there as well as in Munich and Paris, learning from artists such as Christian Griepenkerl (1839–1912) and William Bouguereau (1825–1903). List, along with the renowned artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), co-founded the Vienna Secession, exhibiting at the first Vienna Secession in March 1897. The Secessionists aimed to break free from the constraints of the academic art establishment of the late 19th century. List's work was a mixture of portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes, often with mythological themes. Magnolia is one of List’s most famous works. Its intricate depiction of a beautiful blooming tree against a calm water background has a spiritual quality that evokes a sense of tranquility.
