Austrian painter Wilhelm List was born in Vienna in 1864. He studied there, as well as in Munich and Paris, learning from artists such as Christian Griepenkerl (1839–1912) and William Bouguereau (1825–1903). List, along with renowned artist Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), co-founded the Vienna Secession, exhibiting at the first Vienna Secession in March 1897. The Secessionists sought to break free from the constraints of the academic art establishment of the late 19th century. List's work was a mix of portraits, landscapes, and genre paintings, often with mythological themes. Magnolia is among List's most famous works. Its intricate depiction of a beautiful blooming tree against the backdrop of tranquil waters has a spiritual quality that evokes a sense of calm.
