In Wheatfield with Lark, Vincent Van Gogh abandoned his earlier darker palette, replacing it with bright colors and directional brushstrokes to depict the breeziness of a wheat field swaying in the summer wind. In the last years of his life, he painted several landscapes with wheat fields that evoke a range of emotions. In a letter to his brother, he explained his inspiration: “I am almost certain that these canvases illustrate what I cannot express in words, that is, how healthy and soothing I find the countryside.” His love for the countryside is evident in the nature of the swift and lyrical execution of each stroke, bringing to life every flower and sheaf of wheat. Although not widely accepted during his lifetime, Van Gogh is now one of the most renowned artists in the world, and his incredible paintings will be admired forever.
