In a letter to his sister Wilhelmina Van Gogh wrote: “I often feel that the night is even richer than the day.” In this night scene, the sky is Prussian blue, ultramarine, and cobalt, with shimmering yellow gaslights and stars. The depicted location is in Arles, near the Yellow House where he stayed.
