The famous painting by Van Gogh was created from memory during his extended stay in an asylum in Saint-Rémy, towards the end of his life, in 1889. It was mentioned in correspondence with his brother Theo. Preserved letters from this period discuss and include preliminary sketches, like many of his other works, leaving the mystery of its absence, perhaps contributing to the success of the piece in more recent times. Starry Night captures the essence of Van Gogh's style, with its strong, textured strokes, broad lines of movement, and exaggerated details that indicate the unsettling turmoil associated with the artist's confinement. The dark tower on the left side of the painting overwhelms the quiet settlement below, but it is itself dominated by the glowing orbs in the sky. Starry Night retains the impression of the world around us but points to emotions beyond and behind.
