Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) was written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–98) under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. Since its publication, it has been illustrated by the most prominent artists of their times, the first being Sir John Tenniel. Although his main occupation was as a political cartoonist and illustrator for Punch magazine, Tenniel is now chiefly remembered for his illustrations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The core of his technique was to mimic the effect of wood engraving using ink and paper, evident in the illustrations of Carroll's children's classic. Tenniel's charming illustrations, of course, symbolize Alice for many. This original illustration of the Blue Caterpillar depicts his all-too-human arms. Known for smoking a hookah, the Blue Caterpillar first appeared in the fourth chapter of the original Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and has since become one of the book's most popular characters, despite Alice's dislike of his rudeness and difficult philosophical questions.
