Famous Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. Excited by artists in other countries who began to rebel against orthodoxy, Klimt started developing new ideas, and in 1897 he was a co-founder of the Vienna Secession. The artists of the Vienna Secession did not form a single “school”; they were individuals, many of whom worked in very different fields and approached their work in very different ways. However, they shared similar goals and priorities in striving to free themselves from the academic establishment’s constraints at the end of the 19th century. In this powerful work, Klimt sought to depict the cycle of women’s lives in a realistic light. Awarded a gold medal at the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte in Rome in 1911, this painting illustrates the passage of time. In the full graphic, an older naked woman is crying, while a young mother embraces her sleeping daughter.
