Pier Gabriele Vangelli. (Rome 1899/1989). Born in Trastevere of Romagna to a family of artists, painters, architects, and musicians. His father Emidio was an architect, a friend and collaborator of Piacentini, Sartorio, and Spadini. Pier Gabriele settled in Rome as a sculptor in the mid-1920s, becoming an artistic guide to his brother Antonio, a well-known painter who introduced him to the literary and artistic circles with Ungaretti, Guttuso, Turcato, and Vedova.
Fascinated by classical sculpture, he interprets their renewal. He creates works for important clients, e.g., a pre-war bust of J. Paul Getty. For his works, priced at 42 euros, Vangelli is known as the “Trastevere sculptor.” Significant exhibitions of his work took place in Rome in the '60s, in Paris, and at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, the creation, and design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its characteristic features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a significant resemblance to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, such as Louis XVI style, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word barocco—meaning irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when searching for exclusive antiques suitable for your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many fakes circulate on the market. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the product’s authenticity and compliance with the description and photos.
