Description

Pair of carved acanthus leaf-shaped capitals from Florence, 1900. A pair of Florentine pedestals, table bases made of carved wood, decorated on all four sides with a deep, botanical acanthus leaf pattern. The tops of these bases have profiled corners measuring 23.5 cm on each side. As a table base, adding a square glass top to these Corinthian capitals creates an original pair of coffee tables; they are in good condition, with a warm, lacquered finish. This is Tuscan artisanal craftsmanship by Bartolozzi and Maioli from Florence, dating from the first half of the 20th century.

Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior design. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by the reign of Napoleon. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco' meaning an irregularly developed pearl, was characterized by highly ornate furniture designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style is also significant, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a profound mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using dark stains, cornices, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of buffets and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion’s paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance style furniture. Today, many global brands reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when seeking a luxurious antique that fits your interior.

The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits.
