Description
Pair of carved acanthus leaf-shaped capitals from Florence, 1900. A pair of Florentine pedestals, table bases made of carved wood, decorated on all four sides with a deep, botanical acanthus leaf pattern. The top of these bases has profiled corners measuring 23.5 cm on each side. As a table base, adding a square glass top to these Corinthian capitals creates an original pair of coffee tables; they are in good condition, with a warm, pickled finish. This is Tuscan artisanal craftsmanship by Bartolozzi and Maioli from Florence, dating from the first half of the 20th century.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decor. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture is rooted in the 19th century, especially during the reign of the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant influence from Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The Baroque style, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—features highly ornate furniture designed to exude splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how strongly the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often echoes the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using dark stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Interest in mythology and ancient times was reflected in the forms of supports and legs, often resembling animals.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands recreate such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty and history of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially relevant when selecting luxurious antique pieces for a refined interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photographs. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
