Description
Para gilded Ludwika XV hairpieces, 1700s, carved with volutes, Ex Cimase mirror. Italian gilded hairpieces, circa 1750s, carved with volutes, rococo leaf motifs, gilded with gold on a base of red Armenian wood. These are most likely fragments of antique mirrors, made from pinewood, delicately gilded with gold on a red Armenian wood base. The twisted legs are actually an addition created after the transformation, thus made later. Despite the complexity of the decorative motif typical for Rococo, it is both right and left, meaning the sculptures are mirror images and polished. This pair of gilded Rococo-style furniture elements can be used as door friezes or as simple wall decorations. These pieces originate from Italy and were purchased in a villa in Milan. They are in good condition, with minor gilding losses and restorations.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by the reign of Napoleon. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique-style products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next style is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Rarely used materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style as well is Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, with moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. During this period, mythology and classical themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that each country perceived furniture production differently, so each style had its unique character depending on the nation. This is especially crucial when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is what matters most to buyers, as the market is flooded with fakes.
