Description
Louis XVI extendable table made of mahogany, veneered, equipped with a drawer in the apron strip and four truncated pyramidal legs. The table is of Italian origin, dating from the mid-19th century, and is in perfect condition, restored and polished with shellac to highlight the grain of the wood.
When closed, it looks like a writing desk. Opening the top like a book and flipping it onto the reversed and open leg, which serves as support (see photo below), doubles the surface area of the tabletop, creating a rectangular surface measuring 101 x 103 cm.
Luxurious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was dominant. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. This style was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, characterized by strong references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The Baroque style, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco' meaning irregularly developed pearl, features highly ornate furniture designed to radiate splendor and serve as a symbol of luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style has influenced modern classic furniture, which often resembles the craftsmanship of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, cornices, strong bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and other chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws and eagle heads are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands now reproduce such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty and history of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character, which is especially relevant when selecting exclusive antique pieces for your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with fakes. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photos. We also have access to art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world.
