He was born on January 30, 1898, in Novočerkassk and from childhood showed extraordinary predispositions for drawing and painting. Encouraged by his father, a surgeon, he was entrusted to a local painter. He graduated from the Art High School in Rostov, then moved to Kyiv, where he began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in 1916, called to serve in the military, he had to interrupt his studies. Wounded and taken prisoner first by Austrians, then by the British, he managed to escape to Bulgaria, to Sofia, where he began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He received an American scholarship and in 1925 arrived in Italy, in Milan (residing at viale Abruzzi 114), where he attended the School of Painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. During his studies, he met painter Julia Ivanovna Lund (1905-1974), originally from Norway but born in Russia, who became his wife in 1930, with whom he had three children. He died on July 6, 1970, in Milan.
