Description

Ivan Karpoff, River Landscape, circa 1950. Oil painting on canvas in a modern frame. Depicts the course of a river painted en plein air on an easel, which can be recognized as a quick sketch, the artist's initial intention. The blue of the cloudy sky and snow-capped peaks create a background for the waterway immersed in vegetation. Signed in the lower left corner.

He was born on January 30, 1898, in Novočerkassk and has shown extraordinary talent for drawing and painting since childhood. Encouraged by his father, a surgeon, he was entrusted to a local painter. He graduated from the Art High School in Rostov, then moved to Kyiv, where he began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in 1916, called to serve in the military, he had to interrupt his studies. Wounded and taken prisoner first by Austrians, then by the British, he managed to escape to Bulgaria, to Sofia, where he began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He received an American scholarship and in 1925 arrived in Italy, in Milan (residing at viale Abruzzi 114), where he attended the School of Painting at Brera Academy of Fine Arts. During his studies, he met painter Julia Ivanovna Lund (1905-1974), originally from Norway but born in Russia, who became his wife in 1930, with whom he had three children. He died on July 6, 1970, in Milan.

Exclusive antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

There are many styles characteristic of antique furniture, but we can distinguish a few of the most important. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its variants in the early years of this century include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo styles of classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Everything originated from the reign of Napoleon. It was characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. Next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco' – meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items even further.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive. It used brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These were quite distinctive products, but they also opened up new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports and legs often took animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads – these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, drawing inspiration from Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so every style had its unique character in each nation. This is especially important when searching for the right elegant antique for your interior.

The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
