Description
Hans Burgkmair Battle of Oudenaarde Woodcut. This rare specimen, in excellent condition and very fresh, belongs to a series of woodcuts printed from original 16th-century blocks, engraved by the German Hans Burgkmair the Elder, depicting battles of Emperor Maximilian (1512-1516), titled Marx Treitzsaurwein der Weisskunig (History of Emperor Maximilian I and his ancestors in 236 woodcuts), first published in 1775.
Color printing, also known as siligraphy, is a relief engraving technique in which parts of the upper surface of a wooden panel that do not form part of the design are removed; the matrices are covered with ink and used to produce multiple copies of the same subject through printing with a press. Since woodcut is a type of relief etching, it is easy to incorporate the woodblock into typographic forms, allowing for simultaneous printing of text and images.
Hans Burgkmair, known as the Elder (Augsburg, 1473 – Augsburg, 1531), was a German painter considered the first German painter of the Italian Renaissance, and also the first to apply chiaroscuro techniques in his woodcuts.
The print is mounted in a double cardboard frame measuring 50 x 35 cm and contains antique dealer exhibits from Bologna.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the beloved Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese barocco—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate, luxurious pieces designed to dazzle with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and solid, using brown stains, moldings, robust bases, and relief carvings. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
