Description
Geographical map of the entire northern Italy with the long title “Nova et esauriente Ducatus Venetiani, Mediolani, Genuæ Mantuæ et finitimorum Principatuum delineatio”, first published in Neuwe Archontologia cosmica by Matthäus Merian the Elder, a talented Swiss engraver who began his professional career in Frankfurt am Main at the workshop of Theodor de Bry.
The map is very pleasing to the eye due to its small size, careful and elegant graphics, and the addition of coats of arms of the Republic of Venice, the Duchy of Milan, the Republic of Genoa, and the Duchy of Mantua. It also has an informational character, without claiming excessive precision. In reality, political borders are not marked, and the terrain, as well as the depiction of lakes, is approximate.
Matthäus Merian continued the work of Theodor de Bry, which he managed to significantly expand, with the support of his sons Kaspar and especially the highly valued Matthäus Jr., who after his father's death continued managing the company with unwavering success until 1727.
The geographical map “Nova et esauriente Ducatus Venetiani, Mediolani, Genuæ Mantuæ et finitimorum Principatuum delineatio” can be found in four other editions of Archontologia up to 1695, with text in Latin or German. It also appears in the Itinerarium Italiæ Nov-antiquæ written by Martin Zeiller and also printed by Merian, and finally in a reprint of Itinerarium Italiæ Nov-antiquæ under the changed title Topographiæ Italiæ.
Original antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the beloved Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-styles of Classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese “barocco”—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. The Renaissance also drew inspiration from mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French creators. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
