Description
Detective Oscar Basaran heads to Kidney Island off the coast of Maine to document the negative effects of flickering shadows from wind turbines on residents living nearby, but he is unprepared for what the islanders are experiencing.
Oscar's research shows that sleep deprivation, lack of light, and pounding headaches caused by noise and the continuous stroboscopic effect of sunlight filtered through the spinning blades of turbines induce hallucination episodes in the closest neighbors of the machines.
Older father Melody Larson nearly chokes to death after swallowing a head of monkshood. The pregnant cow of the Granberry family repeatedly crashes into a fence post. Tatum Gallagher mourns her young son, who disappeared over a year ago, presumably thrown into the sea by a wave while fishing on the rocky shore, but some people claim to see him only in the flickering shadows.
Aerosource, the energy corporation that owns the turbines, hired Oscar to investigate the neighbors' claims, but the insurance agent shows no loyalty to the conglomerate, especially after learning that a previous employee sent to the island a year earlier vanished without a trace.
When Oscar meets former science teacher Norris Squires on the island, who was dismissed for teaching his students about the harmful effects of flickering shadows, he learns a theory about Aerosource that sounds too absurd to believe.
Although it seems that the flickering shadow effect has driven some animals on the island to madness, is it possible that it has caused an even worse mental breakdown among human residents? Or is something more sinister at play on the island?
As the investigation deepens, Oscar discovers that the turbines cause an unexpected phenomenon, kept secret by a select group of people on Nerve Island, who have made a scientific breakthrough and are attempting to harness its dark power.
