Eight hundred years ago, the Zhen Empire discovered a damaged human colonization ship drifting on the fringes of their space. The Zhen provided humans with a place to live and incorporated them into their Empire as client states. But it wasn’t easy. Not all Zhen were willing to accept another species into their Empire, and humans faced persecution. For centuries, human languages and history were forbidden, as the Zhen tried to shape humans in their image. Earth and the cultures it nurtured for millennia were forgotten, reduced to little more than legends.

As one of the first humans allowed to serve in the Zhen military, Tajen Hunt became a war hero at the Battle of Elkari, the only human to be officially recognized as a Hero of the Empire. He was given command of a task force and sent to carry out the Empire’s orders in their war against the enigmatic Tabran. But when he failed a critical mission, causing the deaths of millions, he resigned in disgrace and disappeared into a life as a solitary, independent pilot.

When Tajen discovers that his brother, Daav, was killed by Imperial agents, he, his niece, and their newly hired crew set out to complete his brother’s mission: to find Earth, the legendary homeland of humanity. What they uncover will destroy 800 years of peace in the Empire and ignite a war that could be the end of the human race.
