Description

Carved wooden gate from the 18th century by the Lombard workshop, featuring two wings taken from a church altar, carved and perforated floral motifs depicting pomegranates and sunflowers. A rare Lombard balustrade gate consisting of two doors with profiled frames and central panels intricately carved with openwork, featuring phytomorphic and zoomorphic motifs. At the bottom, two birds hold a crown, which is embedded in the right door; at the top, the gate is decorated with floral ornamentation. The damaged frames, one of which on the right door has been replaced, indicate that the gate originally rested on a balustrade or similar structure. The symbolism of the crown, pomegranate, and sunflower is particularly interesting. The wooden, profiled brackets of the cornice on the back are also impressive. The original swallowtail hinges are preserved. This gate is in good condition, comes from a private collection in Lombardy, and dates from the 18th century.

Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century includes the beloved Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include Neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transition into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the Napoleonic era. This style is heavily inspired by Roman and Greek decorative motifs.

Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws strongly from ancient architecture. Antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also noteworthy. The next style is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco,' meaning an irregularly developed pearl. Baroque furniture was highly representative, designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Luxurious materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style has influenced today's classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the former era. An equally significant style is Renaissance. Which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and also left a substantial mark on the art of furniture making. The Renaissance style was quite heavy and bulky. Brown stains were used, as well as cornices, sturdy plinths, and reliefs. It can certainly be said that these were quite distinctive products, but they offered many new possibilities, such as the construction of buffets or generally all chest-type furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports or legs took animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads – these are common features in Renaissance style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture made in this style, taking inspiration from Italian or French creators. This is a sign of admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its own distinct character. This is very important, especially when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.

The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
