Description
An antique wrought iron sign featuring an eagle from the 18th century, Italian ready-to-hang sign made of hand-forged iron. The double frame with scroll-shaped edges, floral and botanical motifs, decorated with ornamentation, surrounds the eagle in the center, topped with an oval crown with acanthus leaves. The eagle is depicted with its body facing forward and wings spread; in Greek and Latin mythology, it is a bird dedicated to Zeus, the god of lightning and clouds.
The eagle is also a symbol of power, victory, and prosperity. It is an ideal architectural element that will give a unique character to the entrance of a villa, old farm, or castle. This sign dates from the late 18th century, originating from northern Italy but purchased in Franciacorta. Good condition, gold embellishment traces visible on both sides of the sign, minimal chips, two leaves. It is a perfect and exceptional architectural feature for the entrance to a castle or old farm.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, especially the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly ornate, luxurious pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, which left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and solid, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to the customer, as the market is flooded with counterfeits.
