Description
An antique wrought iron sign featuring an eagle from the 18th century, an Italian sign ready to hang, made from hand-forged iron. The double frame with scroll-shaped edges, floral and botanical motifs, decorated with ornamentation, surrounds the eagle in the center, topped with an oval crown with acanthus leaves. The eagle is depicted with its body facing forward and wings spread; in Greek and Latin mythology, it is a bird dedicated to Zeus, the god of lightning and clouds.
The eagle is also a symbol of power, victory, and prosperity. It is an ideal architectural element that will give a unique character to the entrance of a villa, old farm, or castle. This sign dates from the late 18th century, originating from northern Italy but purchased in Franciacorta. Good condition, gold embellishment traces visible on both sides of the sign, minimal chips, two leaves. It is a perfect and exceptional architectural element for the entrance to a castle or an old farm.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinguishing features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture dates back to the 19th century, during the reign of the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Original Empire-style furniture originates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces designed to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets or broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.
The key to stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the customer’s perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
