Description
Ancient foldable round walnut table from the 19th century, originating from a Lombard residence. The top consists of two large planks with small joints; the lower band is covered with walnut veneer and features a small circular frame bordering the bottom edge. Four legs are made of beech with several small holes for woodworms in the lower sections. The furniture has been impregnated with woodworm treatment, cleaned, and cold waxed; due to its good condition, no renovation was undertaken, leaving the original patina intact. The tabletop can be opened in the middle and is designed to accommodate a 60 cm extension. A new construction is planned.
Wonderful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture dates back to the 19th century, during which the prevailing Biedermeier style was popular. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories originate from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This style was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was highly decorative furniture meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style also made a significant impact, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and leaving a lasting mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, often using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style furniture. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, giving each style a unique character. This is especially important when searching for an elegant antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
