The list was announced on July 7, 2007, in Lisbon at the Estádio da Luz stadium at 21:30 local time. The list includes: The Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Roman Colosseum, and the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
The Great Wall of China from the People's Republic of China is a vast defensive system consisting of walls, a network of forts, and stone and brick watchtowers. It is also called the "10,000 Li Wall" (here, 10,000 should not be taken literally and rather signifies the "infinite length" of the wall). The total length of the structure, according to China Daily, is 8,851.8 km, comprising 6,259.6 km of man-made walls, 2,232.5 km of natural barriers such as rivers and hills, and 359.7 km of ditches. Some sections of the Wall are not accessible to tourists due to their state of preservation.
