The Colosseum in ancient times functioned as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It was built between 70-72 and 80 AD. Several levels of this magnificent structure were constructed in different styles – the first in Tuscan, the second in Ionic, and the third in Corinthian. It hosted gladiator fights, naumachiae (spectacles depicting naval battles), and hunts for wild animals. Tradition states that Christians were martyred in the Colosseum, which is commemorated by a cross inside the building.

The modern list of the Seven Wonders of the World was chosen through a voting process organized by the Swiss company New Open World Corporation (NOWC). The list was announced on July 7, 2007, at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon at 9:30 PM local time. The list includes: The Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Roman Colosseum, and the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.
