The Colosseum in ancient times functioned as the Flavian Amphitheatre. It was built between 70-72 and 80 AD. Several levels of this magnificent structure were constructed in different styles – the first in Tuscan, the second in Ionic, and the third in Corinthian. It hosted gladiator fights, naumachiae (spectacles depicting naval battles), and hunts of wild animals. Tradition states that Christians were martyred in the Colosseum, which is commemorated by a cross inside the building.
The modern list of the Seven Wonders of the World was chosen by voting organized by the Swiss company New Open World Corporation (NOWC). The list was announced on July 7, 2007, at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon at 21:30 local time.
