Description
Empire chandelier pair made of Czech crystal and bronze from the first half of the 20th century, with eight internal lamps, in excellent condition.
Two chandeliers feature a classic round hot air balloon design, droplet-shaped with bronze crowns, well-carved castings with decorative ovolo moldings, beads, and botanical motifs.
Bronze crowns are connected by a cascade of crystal festoons, which are actually dressed with light from faceted crystals arranged in a graduated manner, all handcrafted during the restoration phase. The pair of chandeliers has been restored, see the before and after photos, and rewired.
The lower part of the structure, in line with the main crown, conceals eight E27 bulbs arranged radially, which illuminate the crystals from inside, enhancing the refraction effect and the vibrant glow of the shining crystals, giving this type of chandelier its name.
They are commonly called balloon chandeliers or hot air balloon chandeliers precisely because of the decorative elements made of transparent Czech crystal illuminated from within, creating a valuable and scenographic effect. They measure 135 cm in height (excluding the chain) and 70 cm in diameter.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century includes the beloved Biedermeier style. Early in the century, this evolved into neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and Victorian styles. Toward the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon, featuring significant influences from Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and noteworthy. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco' meaning an irregularly developed pearl, was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture meant to dazzle with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often resembles the historic period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, especially in the construction of cabinets and chest-type furniture. Mythology and classical themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Many global brands now recreate furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, reflecting admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production varied by country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key to elite antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits.
