Description
Empire chandelier pair made of Czech crystal and bronze from the first half of the 20th century, with eight internal lamps, in excellent condition.
Two chandeliers feature a classic round hot air balloon design, droplet-shaped with bronze crowns, well-carved castings with decorative ovolo moldings, beads, and floral motifs.
Bronze crowns are connected by a cascade of crystal festoons, which are actually dressed with light from faceted crystals arranged in a graduated manner, all handcrafted during the restoration phase. The pair of chandeliers has been restored, see the before restoration photo and the re-electrified version.
The lower part of the structure, in line with the main crown, internally houses eight E27 bulbs arranged radially, illuminating the crystals from within, enhancing the refraction effect and the vivid glow of the shining crystals, which give this type of chandelier its name.
They are commonly called balloon chandeliers or hot air balloon chandeliers precisely because of the decorative elements made of transparent Czech crystal illuminated from inside, creating a valuable and scenographic effect. They measure 135 cm in height (without the chain) and 70 cm in diameter.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior design. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture from the 19th century, including the beloved Biedermeier style. Early 20th-century variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from the reign of Napoleon. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate furniture meant to radiate splendor and luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Many global brands now reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially crucial when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately important for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
