Description

Burla della Botte del Piovano Arlotto copy by Volterrano painted with oil on canvas, depicting a lively banquet with numerous guests. It is a copy of the painting by Baldassarre Franceschini known as Volterrano (Volterra 1611–Florence 1698) in the church of San Cresci in Macioli near Vaglia (FI).

The copy is signed in red with the monogram E.T. in the lower left corner.

The painting tells the story of Burla della Botte Piovano Arlotto, painted for Francesco Parrocchianiego: it is said that Piovano, invited to the table by a group of friends, was asked by the host to go down to the cellar and fetch a bottle of wine from the barrel because the food on the table was finished. Il Piovano, although more bored than by all the words of necessity to undertake this effort, was already elderly when the best young men sat at the table, and as a joker, he decided to make the best of a bad situation. Once he went out from the cellar to the tavern with a decanter in hand, and with a serious face, he addressed the owner himself, telling him to hurry up and go to the cellar himself because he had forgotten about the open barrel. The Volterrano painting captures the same scene, where the host, upon receiving a message from Piovano, presses a chair to jump into the cellar, despising himself, thinking he is mocking the clergyman.

The painting, preserved in good condition in a gilded frame also from the 19th century, originates from Italy.

Prestigious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, creating and designing classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

There are many styles characterizing antique furniture, but we can distinguish a few key ones. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its variants in the early years of this century include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transition into pseudo styles of Classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.

Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign, which imposed a significant resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also drew inspiration from mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance style. Today, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French creators, demonstrating admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for elegant antiques suitable for your interior.

The most important aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
