Description
Van der Straet (known as Stradano) Jan Venationes Ferarum Avium Piscius Chamois Hunting, published by Philippa GALLE (Haarlem 1537 – Antwerp 1612), adapted from the work Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. An original engraving depicting the subject by Jan van der Straet, born in Bruges in 1523 and died in Florence in 1605, digitized and known under the name Giovanni Stradano, a preparatory drawing with hunting themes for the tapestries of Villa Cosimo de' Medici in Poggio a Caiano.
Printed on a piece of thin handmade paper with a watermark, consistent with typical North European paper production from the first half of the 17th century, complete with a plate impression and margins of various sizes from 1 cm to 2 cm, with minor defects along the edges but overall in good condition. The plate features full figures in action, surrounded by bucolic scenery, men, animals, fantasy, and reality intertwined. Latin inscription at the bottom.
Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of traditional and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own characteristic features.
Many styles distinguish antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture originates from the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Early in that century, it included neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe, and Victorian styles. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Stunning Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon’s reign. It features significant references to Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Classical style furniture, such as Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to impress with splendor and play a significant role in luxury interiors. Materials were carefully selected to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can observe how strongly the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often mirrors the grandeur of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and relief decorations. These pieces were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and other chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common features in Renaissance-style furniture. Many global brands today recreate such pieces, inspired by Italian and French artisans, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its own character. This is especially relevant when searching for a luxurious antique that suits a specific interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to the customer, as the market is flooded with fakes.
