Description

In the second pen of the "Icons" series, Montegrappa has chosen a figure who, through the art of film, embodied everything noble in martial arts. The Italian manufacturer pays tribute to a cultural giant, regardless of the nature of the field in which his achievements have been elevated to global heights. The latest instrument in this series honors both an individual who ranks on every list of the most influential of the 20th century and the most impactful personality, just as in Montegrappa’s magnificent history. Combining these two elements resulted in a memorial pen of great significance, evoking many memories.

Thus, it opened the West to Eastern martial arts, which helped create martial arts films outside Hong Kong; a genre that remained popular 37 years after his death. On the 70th anniversary of his birth, Montegrappa is pleased to pay homage to the legendary Bruce Lee. Thanks to his success in films, Lee sparked a sudden surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in 1970. But he was more than just a "kung fu" actor: he gained the Chinese audience’s admiration as a role model, respecting Chinese culture, while his dedication to martial arts resulted in an individual style called "Jeet Kune Do" (The Way of the Intercepting Fist). In 1999, on the eve of the new millennium, Bruce Lee was named by Time Magazine as one of the hundred most influential people of the 20th century.

It is a fitting choice for Montegrappa to select Bruce Lee as the inspiration for the long-awaited interpretation of one of the most coveted pens: The Dragon. Bruce Lee was known as "The Dragon" — a dragon, because he was born in the year and hour of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac. Additionally, the 2010, marking the 70th anniversary of his birth, is also the 15th anniversary of Montegrappa’s introduction of the Dragon pen in 1985.

In Chinese iconography, the Dragon holds special significance. It became a national symbol in 1912 — the same year Montegrappa began producing writing instruments. This limit has celebrated the meeting of two cultures: East and West, since 1995. The fountain pen was born under the sign of the dragon, a fascinating symbolic figure, interpreted by the skilled hands of artist Federico Monti. The image of the dragon was brought to life on the body and cap of the Montegrappa creation, transforming the writing instrument into a work of art inspired by myths and legends.

Montegrappa produced 1912 original pens to commemorate the founding year of the company. They were made from black celluloid and sterling silver. Only 100 fountain pens were issued in a 18K gold version. The fountain pen featured a piston filling system and was available in 6 nib sizes. These pens are rarefound only among collectors.

Reminding of the original, the new pen differs from the 1995 model in the design of the clip, color, details of the Dragon’s tail on the body, nib sizes, and the top of the cap. The limited edition "The Dragon 2010 Bruce Lee" features a body and cap made of red celluloid with black streaks. The cap’s finial is adorned with the timeless yin-yang symbol, representing balance. The cap and body are embraced by beautifully carved dragons; in the sterling silver version, their eyes are set with rubies, and in more luxurious versions, with other precious stones. The nib depicts Bruce Lee’s profile in his famous movement: with his foot and fist extended, in a leap.

This is undoubtedly an interesting and excellent idea for a corporate gift, especially for those who enjoy surrounding themselves with extravagant objects.
