Description

Silver Hanukkah menorah from the early 20th century, created with a base resting on four shaped legs, decorated at the front with two rosettes featuring a circular beaded frame and a central oval tray. Eight candleholders are attached to the edge, and the ninth is inserted into a side socket. In the central relief of the facade, it is visible that the main part depicts a procession of figures dressed in tunics, raising lamps, trumpets, and scrolls. A hook for wall hanging is welded to the back. In our opinion, the lamp dates from around 1920, even though it bears Russian marks from 1884 in Saint Petersburg.

The Chanukkiyah or Hanukkiah is a nine-branched menorah (eight branches plus the central one that lights the others) used for lighting lamps (more often candles) each evening during the celebration of Hanukkah. Lighting this menorah in each family symbolically expresses the eternity and vitality of Judaism in its fidelity to the Law.

Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by strong influences from Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was highly ornate, designed to exude splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Unique materials were selectively used to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how the Baroque style has greatly influenced modern classic furniture, which often resembles the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, featuring brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were also popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance-style furniture. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, reflecting admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an elegant antique that suits your interior.

The key aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as many forgeries circulate on the market.
