Description

17th-century pair of carved walnut caryatids, an antique pair of baroque, handcrafted female figures with beautiful dark patina. Good condition considering their age, both carved panels display original iron hooks on the back, likely part of wall paneling in a richly historic building or decorative sculptures from an old piece of furniture. The pair of caryatids is now ready to be hung on the wall.

A caryatid is a female figure used as an architectural support, serving a decorative function in bands, balustrades, balconies, or shelves. Caryatids were also widely used in furniture decoration, sometimes completely detached from load-bearing functions, solely for ornamental purposes.

Prestigious antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is an increasing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the beloved Biedermeier style flourished. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly representative pieces designed to radiate glamour and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these works.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style also left a significant mark, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries and greatly influencing furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest-type furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, demonstrating admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently across countries, and each style had its unique character. This is especially crucial when searching for exclusive antique pieces suited to your interior.

The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is vital for buyers, as the market is flooded with fakes. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity and accurate description of each item. We also have access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
