Original Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It all originated during Napoleon's reign, which imposed a strong resemblance and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Classical furniture refers to the Louis XVI style, which also heavily draws on ancient architecture. Interesting and noteworthy are all antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. Next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese *barocco* – which translates to an irregularly shaped pearl. These were highly representative pieces of furniture, literally dripping with brilliance and playing a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how greatly the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance style was quite heavy and bulky. Brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and bas-reliefs were used. These were quite distinctive products, but they also offered many new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets or broadly speaking, chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports or legs often took animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads – these are common features in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture made in this style, taking inspiration from Italian or French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its own character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique suitable for your interior.
The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer’s perspective, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
