Description
A set of four original lithographs, depicting Portoferraio, Elba Island, Italy, by André Durand from 1862, framed.
Author: André Durand del. Eug. Cyceri lit. published in Paris by Lemercier and included in the famous work “L’Ile d’Elbe album recueilli sous la diréction de M. le Prince Anatole Demidoff, 1862”
These four prints are framed in the original handmade green-painted cardboard passe par tout with faux marble finish, set in molded yellow Siena frames.
These works originate from a private palace in Milan, are in good condition, showing signs of wear such as age-related deterioration, including stains, spots, and browning of the old paper.
André Durand, 1807-1867, was a French painter, lithographer, and archaeology expert, funded by Russian Prince Anatole Demidov. Durand first produced an album with 18 lithographs of scenic views of Elba Island (in collaboration with Eugène Ciceri).
These are evocative works depicting the wild and partly unexplored island. Among them are views of Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Marciana, as well as the imperial Villa San Martino with the Napoleonic Museum founded by Prince Demidov.
According to current regulations, every piece of art created over 70 years ago in Italy requires a government export license called Belle Arti. Shipping may require an additional 2-3 weeks of processing to obtain the license depending on the final destination of the artwork.
Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, notably the Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. It features significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique pieces in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word barocco—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were selectively chosen to emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the past era. An important style is Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, often using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and antiquity, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global companies reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
