Description

Pocket matchbox in silver color. A pocket-sized matchbox made of 925 sterling silver, rectangular with rounded edges, featuring a crest in the center of the front, inside which the initials A.R. are engraved.

Of English origin, from Birmingham in 1916/17, crafted by a silversmith with the initials R.R., weighing 25.8 grams, and in excellent condition.

The history of matchboxes begins with the “brilliant intuition” of Englishman John Walker, who invented matches in 1840; the idea was immediate—to gather these fires into a case, so they could be kept handy for lighting a pipe or cigar in a club. No gentleman would leave home without this essential accessory in his waistcoat.

So important that it also influenced fashion; tailors of that era started designing and creating men's suits with a special pocket inside the jacket for the matchbox. An incredible variety of models emerged, rapidly succeeding each other from the second half of the 19th century to the 1920s, when they were replaced by mechanical lighters. They were equipped with a snap-on lid and a friction strip, made from various materials. Those made of gold and silver had a feature that allows today to determine the period of production. The greatest enhancement was engraving your initials.

Back then, the matchbox was regarded as a very important promotional tool. It was immediately adopted by World Fairs, the frenzy of the turn of the century, and companies producing alcohol, champagne, and beer, which printed their logos on them.

Beautiful antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that have a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

There are many different styles characteristic of antique furniture, but we can highlight a few of the most important. Eclectic furniture belongs to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was predominant. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles transitioned into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, whose name derives from the Portuguese “barocco”—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to radiate splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Materials were chosen selectively to emphasize the grandeur of these items.

Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cabinets and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports or legs often took animal forms.

Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, drawing inspiration from Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an elegant antique piece suited to your interior.

The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial from the buyer's perspective because many counterfeits circulate on the market. The Luxury Products brand provides a certificate confirming the product's compliance with the actual description and photograph. We have at your disposal art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
