Description
Pair of silver salt cellars, Milan 1800, in a round shape with a tripod base formed from two bands of foil that create a lily, supporting the edge of the salt cellar and ending on a bracket with a heart-shaped element topped with a ball.
The salt cellar consists of a crystal cup engraved with a star at the bottom and is held on the edge by a ring that locks the crystal in place and fits the salt cellar.
On the edge of these ancient Milanese salt cellars, we find traces of plows associated with the second silver hallmark (800/000), relating to the world of seven trions referencing the Milan Guarantee Office between 1812-1872, and finally with a punch mark concerning a goldsmith in a circular field with the initials GS.
Good condition, consistent with dating and usage.
Elegant antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. It’s a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
There are many different styles characterizing antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the Victorian English style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transition into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century, originating from Napoleon’s reign. This period is characterized by significant influence from Roman and Greek decorative motifs.
Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable antique styles include Rococo and Louis XV. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to impress and symbolize opulence. Materials were chosen selectively to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.
Today, we can see how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which often reflects the aesthetics of the past. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, cornices, strong bases, and relief decorations. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly defined chest furniture. Mythology and ancient themes were popular, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Many global brands now recreate furniture inspired by Italian and French artisans, paying homage to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture styles varied by country, each with its unique character. This is especially relevant when seeking an exclusive antique piece suited to your interior.
The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this matters most to buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of each item, matching the description and photos. We also offer access to art appraisers, historians, and experts from around the world.
