Description

Oak chest with bottles of alcohol 1800, English captain Edward John Ward's chest, a soldier of the Royal Academy, with a brass hidden handle engraved with the inscription Capt. E.J. Ward R. A. and printed initials L.S.D. The box contains two dark glass bottles, handles with grips, as well as an embossed silver seal and cap. The LSD numbers are engraved on the neck of the bottle, matching the initials on the handle. The marks on the cap confirm silver assay 925/000 and indicate the Sheffield Assay Office from 1860/61, whose goldsmith with initials H.A. remains unidentified.

The brass lock comes from the renowned Chubb company in London. The box is in good condition, apart from the green lining, which shows signs of wear consistent with age and use.

Inside the box are documents confirming the soldier's career and death. Edward John Ward 1836-1879.

Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for interior decoration. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that possess a specific character and soul. It is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.

Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, inspired by Napoleon's reign. This period emphasized grandeur and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.

Neoclassical furniture, associated with Louis XVI, also draws heavily from ancient architecture. Notable and interesting are antique products in Rococo style and Louis XV. Baroque, derived from the Portuguese word 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl—was characterized by highly ornate, luxurious furniture designed to impress with splendor and play a significant role in opulence. Selective use of materials was employed to emphasize the grandeur of these pieces.

Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classic furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. The Renaissance style, flourishing in the 15th and 16th centuries, also left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also introduced new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times inspired many details, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.

Lion paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce such furniture, inspired by Italian and French creators, as a tribute to the beauty of Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, and each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for a luxurious antique that suits your interior.

The key aspect of stylish antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial for buyers, as many fakes circulate on the market.
