Description
Ancient Golden and Bulinata box made from white walnut with an octagonal shape, gilded along the edges and lid, decorated with engraving that creates a pleasing decorative frame. The box is in good condition, even though the wood has deformed slightly due to a gentle warping of the lid and edges. The gilding remains in good condition along the edges with minor losses, while on the lid only a few traces of gilding are visible, with the dominant color being the red hue of the Armenian burl. Northern Italy, early 19th century.
Exquisite antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Currently, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage items that possess a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few key ones stand out. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, during which the Biedermeier style was predominant. Its early variations include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Empire-style furniture dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy and interesting are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese "barocco" — meaning an irregularly developed pearl. Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese "barocco" — meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly representative pieces of furniture, literally dripping with splendor and serving a significant role in luxury. Unique, selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style had on modern classical furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance. Which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and also left a significant mark on furniture-making art. Renaissance style was quite heavy and massive. Brown stains, cornices, sturdy bases, and reliefs were used. These products were quite distinctive but offered many new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards or broadly defined chest furniture. Here, too, there was an interest in mythology and ancient times, so supports and legs often took animal forms.
Lion paws, eagle heads — these are common features in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands reproduce furniture made in this style, inspired by Italian and French craftsmen. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It is important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The most important aspect of elite antique furniture is originality. And this is ultimately crucial for the buyer, as many counterfeits circulate on the market.
