Developing our fragrances took eighteen months, with hundreds of hours dedicated to blending, pouring, and testing. All to achieve the perfect balance of wax and scent distribution for each size of candle, combined with the optimal thickness of various wicks, to ensure the highest quality burn.

Our candles have been produced at our Dublin headquarters since 1488. They are still hand-poured, just as they were centuries ago, blending tradition with modernity. We are committed to manufacturing in Ireland and maintain the status of the oldest company in Ireland.

HISTORY

It all began on Wynetavern Street, Dublin, where John G Rathborne founded our manufactory. He moved from Chester in England to start a new career in candle making. Candles have been an integral part of people's lives since the 1530s. Joseph’s candles became a key supplier for the city. Our products made Dublin and Ireland’s seas safe at night, as they were used to light homes, streets, and lighthouses for residents and visitors from across the ocean.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

With over 500 years of experience, we develop our candles along with the appropriate techniques and materials. During the industrial revolution, we moved away from animal tallow to develop new wax formulas using beeswax and stearic acid. This new blend ensured cleaner, slower burning while maintaining our artisanal methods, such as handcrafting all our candles.

To celebrate being the oldest candle company in the world and five centuries of handcrafted production, we created the Beyond the Pale collection—six beautiful fragrances that capture the spirit of Ireland with a luxurious and modern touch. The glow of candles is now more familiar in homes than on streets, and this collection is the result of centuries of innovation. Inspired by Dublin, “Beyond the Pale” refers to the wild area outside the safety of city walls. We crafted scents inspired by Irish roses, herbal blends of mint and thyme, and Irish tree bark. Our luxurious fragrances are designed to complement your home and indulge the senses, creating a range of desirable and stylish accessories for modern living.

Captivating top notes of lily, honeysuckle, and jasmine are complemented by fresh hints of peach and lemon, followed by soothing notes of white wood and vetiver. The composition is a harmonious bouquet where sweet notes originate from wild Irish flowers intertwined with green hedgerows.

The White Pepper, Honeysuckle & Vertivert fragrance composition was developed by Rathbornes perfumers for those who can appreciate refined scents. 

The candle features four symmetrically arranged wicks of perfect thickness for faster wax melting, ensuring a more intense fragrance that delights the senses for up to 50 hours. 

It is recommended to trim the wick to 10 mm and remove any impurities before each lighting.
