It took us eighteen months to create our fragrances, with hundreds of hours dedicated to blending, pouring, and testing. This ensures that for each candle size, there is the best balance of wax and fragrance distribution combined with the optimal thickness of various wicks selected to ensure the highest quality burning.

Our candles have been made at our Dublin headquarters since 1488. They are still hand-poured, just as they were centuries ago, creating a correlation between tradition and modernity. We are committed to manufacturing in Ireland and maintain the status of the oldest brand in Ireland.

We are the oldest candle-making company in the world. For centuries, we have been pioneers of new candle-making techniques at our factory in Dublin, and we still reside in this city. BACKGROUND

It all began on Wynetavern Street, Dublin, where John G Rathborne founded our manufactory. He moved from Chester, England, to start a new profession in candle making. Candles have been an integral part of people's lives since the 1530s. Joseph's candles became a key supplier for the city. Our products made the city of Dublin and the Irish seas safe at night, as they were used to light homes, streets, and lighthouses for residents and visitors from overseas.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

Throughout our 500 years of experience, we have developed our candles and the appropriate techniques and materials for our products. During the industrial revolution, we moved away from animal tallow to develop special new wax formulas using beeswax and stearin. This new blend provided a clean, slower burn while preserving our artisanal methods, such as handcrafting all our candles.

“BEYOND THE PALE” COLLECTION

To celebrate being the oldest candle-making company in the world and five centuries of handcrafting, we created the Beyond the Pale collection, six beautiful scents that capture the spirit of Ireland with an exclusive and modern twist. The glow of candles is now more familiar in the home than on the streets, and this collection is the result of centuries of innovation. We drew inspiration from Dublin, saying: Beyond the Pale; the wild area beyond the safety of city walls. We created scents inspired by Irish roses, herbal blends of mint and thyme, and the bark of Irish trees. We create our luxurious fragrances to complement the home and indulge the senses, creating a range of desirable and stylish accessories for modern living.

In this incredibly vibrant blend, the scent of Irish blackcurrant leaves is accompanied by uplifting jasmine. Spicy clove adds vigor to the composition, with a base of Irish forest scents - sun-dried green moss and wild heather. This incredibly rich and intense composition is a true ode to life! 

The blend of genuine beeswax and natural essential oils is a mark of the highest quality. The unique composition of fragrance notes will become an invisible yet highly distinctive hallmark of the space where the candle is placed. 

Enclosed in elegant glass and packaged in a chic box, this candle makes a special gift for beauty connoisseurs. 

The Cassis Leaves and Jasmine composition was developed by Rathbornes perfumers for those who appreciate sophisticated scents. 

The candle features four symmetrically placed wicks of ideal thickness for faster wax melting, making the fragrance more intense and pleasing to the senses for up to 50 hours. 

It is recommended that the wick be trimmed to a length of 10 mm and that any debris be removed before relighting the candle.
