Developing our fragrances took eighteen months, with hundreds of hours dedicated to mixing, pouring, and testing. All to achieve the perfect balance of wax and scent distribution for each candle size, combined with the optimal thickness of various wicks, selected to ensure the highest quality burn.

BACKGROUND

It all began on Wynetavern Street, Dublin, where John G Rathborne founded our manufactory. He moved from Chester in England to start a new career in candle making. Candles have been an integral part of people's lives since the 1530s. Joseph’s candles became a key supplier for the city. Our products helped ensure that Dublin and Irish seas remained safe at night, as they were used to light homes, streets, and lighthouses for residents and visitors from across the ocean.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION

Throughout our 500-year history, we have developed our candles along with the appropriate techniques and materials. During the industrial revolution, we moved away from animal tallow to create new wax formulas using beeswax and stearic acid. This new blend provided a cleaner, slower burn while maintaining our artisanal methods, such as handcrafting all our candles.

To celebrate being the oldest candle-making company in the world and five centuries of handcrafted production, we created the Beyond the Pale collection, featuring six beautiful fragrances that capture the spirit of Ireland with an exclusive and modern touch. The Dublin Tea Rose fragrance was developed by Rathbornes perfumers for those who appreciate refined scents. 

The candle features four symmetrically arranged wicks of perfect thickness for faster wax melting, resulting in a more intense fragrance that delights the senses for up to 50 hours. 

It is recommended to trim the wick to 10 mm and remove any debris before each lighting.
