The game of roulette originated in France. It is believed that French scientist Blaise Pascal was the father of this game, having built a machine in 1645 that served as the precursor to modern roulette. Pascal was particularly fascinated by mathematics, especially probability theory, and his device was designed to help him understand the mechanics of randomness and chance.
Poland learned about chess in the 12th century, with Bolesław Krzywousty reportedly playing it. It is not definitively known how chess arrived in Poland—whether by sea, brought from Russia, or like in several other European countries, introduced by knights returning from the Crusades.
Playing cards were probably known in China as early as the 11th century. They appeared in medieval Europe and became most popular in France, Italy, and Spain. As early as 1321, Bishop Wirzburg prohibited his priests from playing cards.
