Description
The large Kutani porcelain vase from the Meiji period is an outstanding example of Japanese art, reflecting the rich tradition of Kutani ceramics, which developed in the 17th century in the city of the same name. This vase, dating from the late 19th century, features an intense red background and intricate gold decoration depicting numerous flowers, birds, and scenes from everyday life.
The main scene shows two women playing, while another female figure displays a drawing to a seated child. It draws attention with its liveliness and artistic skills. The complexity of the decoration is so great that it is difficult to describe in full, highlighting the mastery of the artisans of that time.
The jar has a lid decorated with an image of a Pho dog standing on a rock, a symbol of protection and good luck. Notice should be given to some restorations on the edge of the lid and minor chips, which are traces of the past and add character and history to the piece.
The vase is placed on a meticulously carved base made of red lacquered wood, further emphasizing its beauty and value. The overall dimensions are significant: the height of the pedestal is 76.5 cm, and the base measures 41 x 41 cm, while the vase itself is 61 cm tall with a diameter of 47 cm. The set is complemented by a cover measuring 31.5 cm in height and 28.5 cm in diameter.
Finally, the vase is signed with a gold ideogram on a red background, visible at the bottom, which attests to its authenticity and value. The Meiji period, lasting from 1868 to 1912, is known for profound cultural and artistic transformations in Japan, making this vase not only a decorative object but also a part of history.
Exceptional antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts for high-quality vintage items that possess a specific character and soul. This is a nod to history, craftsmanship, and the creation of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly notable. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, marked by the prevailing Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and the English Victorian style. Toward the end of the century, these styles transition into pseudo styles of classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque.
Beautiful Empire-style furniture dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It originated during Napoleon’s reign, characterized by significant similarities and references to Roman and Greek ornamentation.
Neoclassical furniture reflects the Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Noteworthy are antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles. The next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly developed pearl. These were highly decorative pieces meant to shine with splendor and play a significant role in luxury. Selectively used materials were employed to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much influence the Baroque style has had on modern classic furniture, which is designed with a strong resemblance to the former era. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture design. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and massive, using brown stains, moldings, sturdy bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of cupboards and broadly speaking, chest furniture. They also reflected an interest in mythology and ancient times, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
The most important aspect of vintage antique furniture is originality. Ultimately, this is crucial from the buyer's perspective, as the market is filled with many forgeries.
