Description
On November 9, 2005, Muhammad Ali received the Freedom Medal: the “Otto Hahn Peace Medal In Gold” awarded by the United Nations Association in Germany, which he received for his contribution to the human rights movement. In terms of the impact of his personality on the 20th century, he became an icon of the highest rank.
We present to you the "Montegrappa Icons Series". Since 1912, Montegrappa, the oldest Italian manufacturer, has been producing fountain pens and is the only one that manufactures them in its original factory. In this limited edition, it pays tribute to cultural icons, regardless of the fields in which their character and achievements have led them to receive global awards. The Italian manufactory initiated this unique series with a remarkable, yet controversial personality, who is prominently featured on every list of the most influential figures of the 20th century. The person who revolutionized boxing at every level is none other than Muhammad Ali. He not only created an enviable record in the ring but also built an image of a heroic personality outside of it.
To reflect elements of Muhammad Ali’s diverse and varied career, Montegrappa combines several characteristic details in the "Tribute to Muhammad Ali" Icon pen. The nib depicts the iconic victorious silhouette with raised arms, just above the name Ali. Between the nib and the pen body, there is a shimmering black resin grip, and the body itself is finished with pearl resin with a black stripe running parallel to the body, inspired by the distinctive shorts of the boxing champion.
To achieve the desired black-and-white effect, Montegrappa used the most advanced material with unique properties. It has half the weight of glass of the same thickness, excellent optical clarity, and light transmission properties. It also possesses the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and offers excellent bend resistance and better damage resistance. Equally important is the emotional pleasure for the writer, derived from the physical contact with a warm-to-the-touch pen.
The top of the body is decorated with two black bands encircling it, reminiscent of Ali’s sock tops.
The clip, adorned with a characteristic Montegrappa ball, evokes the shape of the seam on his boxing gloves. The cap assembly is designed for speed, while the top of the cap features a ring with the inscription “Word Championship”, set with diamonds. Finally, the cap is decorated with a black-signed autograph, and the top bears an engraved inscription: “Ali The Greatest of All Time”. The limited edition: Icons “Tribute to Muhammad Ali” references the boxer’s life.
The pen concludes the beautiful chapter of his sports career, which he began on October 29, 1960, with his first professional fight against Tunney Hunsaker, and the last one on December 11, 1981, against Trevor Berbick.
Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984, Ali is still regarded and perceived as an exceptional person and athlete today.
The number 1942 is the year of his birth. The number 61 represents the total number of fights in his professional ring career, including 56 wins, 37 by knockout. Guided by these numbers, Montegrappa created 1942 fountain pens and 1942 ballpoint pens made of resin and sterling silver, as well as 61 fountain pens and 56 ballpoint pens made of gold.
An exclusive "knockout" edition is also available, featuring gold accents and diamonds set on the top of the cap. Only 37 pieces will be produced, and the customer will decide whether it will be a fountain pen or a ballpoint pen. Each gold version will be numbered according to a specific opponent and fight. Each pen will be engraved with the surname of the fighter, as well as the date and location of the event.
Muhammad Ali, during one of the few interviews he has given recently, summarized his contribution to global culture with a characteristic blend of humility and pride, which defines his place in the limited edition “Icons”: …I will say how I would like to be remembered; as a black man who won the heavyweight world champion title, who was witty and treated everyone well, as a man who never looked down on those who admired him, as a man who represented freedom, justice, and equality, and I would like people not to forget what I looked like."This exclusive pen is an excellent gift for collectors of timeless icons. It expresses the heroic attitude presented by both Muhammad Ali and Montegrappa in pursuit of excellence. Highly recommended!
