Description
Hand-painted polychrome figurine of a boxer made of Bing & Grondahl porcelain, produced in the 1960s by Danish artist Svend Jespersen (1895-1985), with model number 2212 T. See the logo at the bottom.
The Bing & Grondahl porcelain factory was founded in 1853 by Vilhelm Gröndahl and his two brothers, art book traders Meyer and Jacob Herman Binga. In 1898, Bing & Grondahl adopted the “Three Towers” as their trademark, an ancient symbol of Copenhagen from Absalon’s Castle.
Danish artistic production is characterized by the underglaze technique, known as slip glazing, applying glaze before firing rather than after, thus skipping the second firing stage, which creates light layers very similar to watercolor painting. The color then gains delicate shades and specific patterns.
Stylish antique furniture and accessories can be an excellent idea for decorating our interiors. Today, there is a growing number of enthusiasts of high-quality vintage products that have a distinct character and soul. This is a nod to history, creation, and the design of classic and timeless furniture. There are many different styles in antique furniture, each with its own distinctive features.
Many styles characterize antique furniture, but a few are particularly prominent. Eclectic furniture refers to the 19th century, dominated by the Biedermeier style. Its early 20th-century variants include neo-Gothic, Gothic, Rococo, Louis-Philippe style, and finally the English Victorian style. By the end of the century, these styles evolved into pseudo-classicism, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.
Empire-style furniture and accessories date from the late 18th to early 19th century. Everything was influenced by Napoleon’s reign. It emphasized Roman and Greek decorative motifs and references.
Neoclassical furniture is associated with Louis XVI style, which also strongly references ancient architecture. Antique products in Rococo and Louis XV styles are also interesting and worth noting. Next is Baroque, a term derived from the Portuguese 'barocco'—meaning an irregularly shaped pearl. These were highly ornate, statement pieces designed to radiate splendor and serve a luxurious purpose. Materials were selectively chosen to further emphasize the grandeur of these items.
Today, we can observe how much the Baroque style influenced modern classical furniture, which is often designed with a strong resemblance to the historical period. An important style is also Renaissance, which flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries and left a significant mark on furniture craftsmanship. Renaissance furniture was quite heavy and robust, using brown stains, moldings, strong bases, and reliefs. These products were quite distinctive but also opened new possibilities, such as the construction of credenzas and broadly speaking, chest furniture. Mythology and ancient times also inspired these designs, with supports and legs often taking animal forms.
Lion’s paws, eagle heads—these are common motifs in Renaissance style. Currently, many global brands recreate such furniture, drawing inspiration from Italian and French artisans. This reflects admiration and respect for the history of the most beautiful Renaissance antiques. It’s important to remember that furniture production was perceived differently in each country, so each style had its unique character. This is especially important when searching for an exclusive antique that suits your interior.
The key aspect of prestigious antique furniture is originality. This is ultimately crucial for buyers, as the market is flooded with counterfeits. Luxury Products provides documentation confirming the authenticity of the product in accordance with its description and photos. We also have appraisers, art experts, historians, and specialists from around the world at your disposal.
